This dive site "El Agujero" is certainly one of the most spectacular from the Canary archipelago for observation of an abundant and varying wildlife and has a place of great interest for diver enthusiasts.
You find the dive site Marine Reserve Arinaga “El Cabrón” in the southeast of the island Gran Canaria, near the village of Arinaga and about 30 minutes by car from Las Palmas and 25 minutes from Playa del Ingles.
The local people describe this place not in vain as “The jewel”, with an abundance in biodiversity that some divers had not expecting here in the Atlantic Ocean after their first dive in that diving region. Because on the last few kilometers before arriving at the Marine Reserve of Arinaga it is more like a dry and sometimes very windy moonscape. No trees, no palm trees, no benches to rest, No kiosk where you could buy something refreshing. Just nothing. We only...
But if you take a look over the lava rock cliff down to the water and look at the crystal clear deep blue of the Atlantic Ocean you thought that this will be a wonderful dive and you know already that you're going here more than once diving. Morenas (Moray), Verrugatos (Umbrina cirrosa - Drums or croakers), Brotas (Phycis phycis - Forkbeard), Abbots (Fusca mycteroperca - Island Grouper "or" Comb grouper "), Hereras (Lithognathus mormyrus - Striped seabream) , Meros (Epinephelus marginatus - Dusky grouper), Angelotes (Squatina squatina - Angelshark), pejesapos (Uranoscopus scaber- Atlantic stargazer), barracudas (Sphyraena viridensis - yellowmouth barracuda) besides a massive bank Roncadores (Pomadasys incisus - Bastard grund). To mention only a few species of fish you will encounter there.
The dive site of "El Cabrón" offers five different diving routes. Three start from the same starting point. The first route, and indeed the most popular, starts at the direction to the south, that is along the El Cabrón reef to the right.
The access to the reef El Cabrón El Agujero is a small path down the lava rock cliff to a small rocky plateau where we can slip easily in the ocean. After you are under the water surface you realize why this dive site is named "The hole - El Agujero".
After a few meters dive descend we leave this hole shaped rock formation and attain Sandy seabed which is flanked on the right side with massive cliff walls. We pass until this point several Trumpetfish (Aulostomus strigosus), colorfully Parrotfish (Sparisoma cretense), Atlantic Damselfish (Chromis limbatus), Bluefin Damselfish (Abudefduf luridus) and countless others continually to this place domestic small and medium sized sea creatures In some distance passing huge schools of Sand smelt (Atherina presbyter) this diving area.
On our way down of the dive site we passing rugged rocks covered with shining Yellow Tube Sponge (Aplysina aerophoba), feather like Nudibranch species (Aglaophenia pluma) and many other types of here domestic sponges and creates a very colorfully contrast with the blue of the Atlantic Ocean.
The maximum depth we will reach is about 23 meters, there we find at the bottom of the reef numerous caves, crevices, large rocks and at the end we passing this mystical protruding from the Sandy seabed volcanic stone arch where reside many marine creatures such as the Brown Filefish (Stephanolepsis hispidus), Ornate Wrasse (Thalassoma pavo). In the sandy seabed Mullets, Wide Eyes Flounder and Sole have found their home. We passing huge shoal of Bustard Grunds (Pomadasys incisus), Cow Breams (Sarpa salpa) and White Breams (Diplodus sargus). In the rocky crevices of the massive rock formations different morays have found their hiding place. In the smaller and bigger underwater caves from the natural reef "El Cabrón" we can meet the Chucho negro "Round Stingray" with impressive sizes of more than one meter. Other Rays species like the Eagle Rays, Butterfly Rays, Striped Eagle Rays and Torpedo Ray are also very frequently in this beautiful diving area of Arinaga.
